Facts About the Olympics Opening Ceremony

Before we dive into the recipes, here are some fast facts about the Opening Ceremony:

When: The opening ceremony takes place on Friday, July 26th at 1:30 p.m. EST. If you’re busy during the day and can’t catch the ceremony in the afternoon, NBC will play an “enhanced encore” at 7:30 p.m. EST.

Where: For the first time EVER, the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics won’t begin in a stadium, but a river! According to NBC, the parade of athletes will travel along the Seine, which runs through the heart of Paris. What makes it extra cool is that this is the first Opening Ceremony that doesn’t require an admission fee for spectators. Olympic fans will be gathering all along the route to watch the parade go by!

Let’s Get to the Olympic Food!

As a mom to two relatively picky eaters, I scoured the internet to find French(ish) recipes that even the pickiest kid can get excited about. Everything is more fun with themed food!

1. Easy Crepes with Nutella

Olympic food: crepes on a white plate with whipped cream, strawberries, and chocolate drizzle.Guaranteed my kids will gobble up these easy crepes, especially if they are filled with Nutella and topped with powdered sugar! Get the recipe here.

2. French Ham Sandwich (Jambon-Beurre)

A baguette sandwich with ham.Basic but a crowd-pleaser, these simple ham sandwiches on a delicious baguette would be fun to cut up into mini sandwiches. Spring for the good deli ham (IMO Boar’s Head) and a quality baguette (Publix has a great bakery, or grab one from Baguette Magic!) since the sandwich is so simple. Get the recipe here.

3. Steak Frites (Steak and Fries)

Olympic food: A plate of fries and steak cut into strips. This one sounds fancy but it’s pretty simple. The parents might be more excited about this one than the kids, but also it’s french fries . . . so I think everyone can get on board! Make it easy on yourself and use a bag of frozen fries — I won’t tell anyone! Get the recipe here.

4. Mousse au Chocolat

Chocolate mousse in a glass bowl with a spoon, whipped cream, and chocolate shavings. If your kids are like mine, they turn their noses up at anything new, EXCEPT when it comes to desserts! This chocolate mousse is probably going to be their favorite part of the meal! Get the recipe here.

Even if these exact recipes aren’t up your alley, I hope this inspires you to do something fun with your family for the Opening Ceremony! U-S-A! U-S-A!
