Dorchester County Library has been my home library for decades. I remember the exciting feeling of getting my very own library card and checking out a stack of early readers. I also have memories of being overwhelmed writing a research paper in a sea of non-fiction and reference books.
Now, as a mother of two, I enjoy taking my kids to the library. Some may find the George H. Seago, Jr. Library unalluring, but once inside you are greeted by the kindest staff members and a plethora of programs for every age and interest!
As babies and toddlers, my kids loved attending storytime. They would be captivated by the stories and excited for the songs and dances in between. Now at school age, they enjoy the computers with access to ABC Mouse, picking out books on their own reading level, and programs like Summer Reading and Lego Club!
The Dorchester County Library programs are for more than just the kids. I have used their Book Boxes. You fill out a brief questionnaire and you get matched with a couple of books that go inside a themed book box full of fun goodies! There are also classes offered and trivia nights. Follow Dorchester County Library on Instagram to stay updated on all their events.
Currently, there are three county libraries, George H. Seago, Jr. on Trolley Road and Jennie J. McMahan in St. George, and the new one in North Charleston near Fort Dorchester High School and the Aquatic Center. But more are on the way! The Ashley River Branch will be located across from Ashley River Park. There are also plans of moving the current Summerville Branch to Downtown Summerville. Libraries are more than just a place to borrow books. A library is a place where the community can come together, learn, and grow. Dorchester County Library does an amazing job with that. It’s the kind, helpful, and fun humans that make it work so well. Escape the heat of the summer and visit your closest Dorchester County Library!
