Clements Ferry Road Living…

Everyone – “Where do you live?”

Me – “Off of Clements Ferry Road.”

    <crickets>

Everyone – “Oh, so on Daniel Island?”

Me – “No, but close! ย Just a few miles down the road.”

    <side eye>

Oy! ย Can you relate? I know MANY of y’all can!

There are several neighborhoodsย off of Clements Ferry Road. The Retreat at Beresford,ย Beresford Hall, Beresford Creek Landing, Beresford Commons, Nelliefield Plantation, and The Peninsula. Have I missed any? Cain Crossing, folks – I am sure you can relate! ย There are several neighborhoods in progress, as well.

We do not live in Mount Pleasant (although many of us may have that wish!). It’s not Wando or Cainhoy. Nope, we don’t live on Daniel Island!

We are in Charleston City limits, but in Berkeley County. Our address is “Charleston” with a Daniel Island zip code.

    Confused yet? Yup, me too!

Some of our children are zoned for Daniel Island School while others are zoned for Cainhoy School. Rumor has it, ALL of our cuties will be zoned for the brand new schools: Philip Simmons Elementary/Middle (August 2016) and Philip Simmons High (August 2017). ย Rejoice – something we get to share with others!

Having a town/area name sure would be helpful!

Without further ado, You Know You Live “Off of Clements Ferry Road”ย When You…

    • Shake your head when you hear that road widening, a 2-year project, will not start until 2016!
    • Take a deep breath (while saying 4-letter words under your breath) when taking a left out of your neighborhood
    • Have to travel to Publix on Daniel Island or Harris Teeter on 41 for milk (MILK!)
    • Beg and plead for a pharmacy and a coffee shop (I vote CVS and Dunkin’ Donuts, all day long!)
    • Wish there were more restaurants/take out choices…and delivery options, even!
    • Curse the tractor trailors and container trucks, at least daily
    • ย Wonder if that Cainhoy Fire Station is actually in working order or not…? ย They sure clean that fire truck often!
    • Think about Bo-Berry Biscuits each time you pass the Bojangles (okay, maybe this only applies toย pregos!)
    • Want to hurt people who use that random lane by the light at 526 as a merging lane when it SO IS NOT!
    • Are beyond curious about the inside of “the blue building,” but not enough to check it out
    • Worry that if your family had an emergency, there would be confusion/delays by authorized personnel (a history of this has been documented!)
    • Are thankful that you only smell the Paper Mill a few times a month, when the wind is just wrong
    • Love where you live, but wish itย just HAD Aย NAME!!!

What do you wish we hadย off of Clements Ferry Road?

Any town name suggestions? ย Anything is better than NOTHING!

    1. Yep, good ol’ CFR. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m in the Peninsula now, but moving to Nelliefield in two weeks. Can’t beat the size of house you get for the money out here vs. Mt. Pleasant…and IMO it’s not that far from most of Mt. Pleasant, so I still feel like I have those perks. I don’t see the big difference living like WAY inside Dunes West or Rivertowne than where I live because by the time they get OUT of their neighborhood, I’m pretty much there already. The new schools are going to be great…glad this is the last year at Cainhoy. Having them right there will be so convenient.

    2. We just moved here and this blog is perfect!!!
I would love to see Starbucks (need my morning crack! Aaaaannnnd … they usually have a nice sitting area to relax before starting the day.
Also – would love to see WHOLE FOODS (I have submitted a written request for them to look at this area).
Agreed that there needs to be some good – not fast food – restaurants. Seeing more GF options on menus would be wonderful too!

    3. The area “Off Clements Ferry Road” is called the Wando and Cainhoy community. The now Daniels Island area was known as The Ferry or yellow house area. Before all the subdivisions came in. It was a quite, no traffic community and we didn’t even need extra lanes. A lot of things has changed, but for the people who grew up there, wish it would’ve stayed the same. Once upon a time, no one wanted to live here Off Clements Ferry. It was considered the poverty stricken area. Now more subdivisions are being built as we speak. I miss the good old days.

      • I concur. It does indeed have a name. Wando/Cainhoy. However, since all of the new development I’m assuming that those names do not suffice for new residents.

I along with Maurica hope that the original names hold so that our history and our culture is not lost in translation.

“off of Clements Ferry Road” has a name……..Wando, Cainhoy, Clements Ferry —perhaps the prestige of “Daniel Island” has caused some to want to abandon these historic names.

    4. Cainhoy Fire Department is a fully operational Fire & Rescue department that provides coverage to un-incorporated areas of Berkeley County including Cainhoy, Wando, and parts of Huger. Station 3 on Clements Ferry Road is currently our headquarters station. We staff this station with part-time employees Monday-Friday 8am-4pm. The rest of the time is covered by 30 trained and certified members that volunteer to help their community.

Thank you for noticing cleanliness of our equipment. We appreciate the apparatus and equipment that is provided to us by our taxpayers, and take pride in maintaining all of it in a clean and working order.

    5. Hi Sarah,

This is a great blog post! Someone posted it to the Peninsula FB page so I was lucky enough to catch it. We moved from Upstate NY (near Albany) to Charleston in December 2013. Originally moved into The Peninsula but quickly got frustrated over pretty much everything in your post – not to mention the crazy HOA CMG. Lasted a year. Loved the area and people, but ended up moving to Mt. P. The tractor trailers were the worst, and you are totally spot on about the lack of a pharmacy. I can’t imagine what the morning commute will look like during the road widening project.

Hopefully all the communities eventually have their own identity, but we are so happy we moved out when we had the opportunity to. Will check out some more of your posts now.

      Cheers,
      Chris

    6. I have gotten to the point that I just give my zip code and they tell me where I live. I have had it show up as Cainhoy, Charleston, Wando and Huger. I moved from Sullivans island but have to say I love the location just wish I could find a few acres not attached to a HOA especially CMG. I am begging for a couple of places that deliver within an hour and 45 mins but no such luck. However a grocery store would be the best. Thankfully the butcher on Clements Ferry started carrying bread, milk, butter and eggs. I love your post.
