Coming up with the perfect gift idea is hard.
Really hard. Especially for people that A. have everything. Or B. you don’t know very well but need to get them something – like a teacher. Whenever I receive a homemade gift, I think to myself, “Wow, this person took the TIME to create something special for me.”
As a busy mom, time is the most important thing in my day. I don’t have enough of it, so almost every minute is planned. That’s why a gift made by hand is so special.
Give the gifts you give this holiday season a personal touch with these three (easy) do-it-yourself food gift ideas.
Now, since you’re going to be giving someone food, it’s a good idea to see if that person has any food allergies. I know you’re thinking, “Thanks captain obvious!” But it’s important.
People are allergic to a lot of foods these days – nuts, eggs, gluten, etc., which means we need to be sensitive to that when we bake anything. You really need to ask in order to avoid sending someone to the emergency room with an anaphylactic reaction. That wouldn’t be good. BUT, don’t let that deter you from making something delectable for a gift!
People’s faces light up whenever you hand them a Christmas plate stacked with cookies or clear cellophane bags with their favorite candy. The reaction is totally worth it.
3 Easy DIY Gift Ideas for the Holidays
Bourbon Pecan Pralines
I made these bourbon pecan pralines for a party a few weeks back, and they were a huge hit. Buttery, salty, and rich. So, so good. People kept pointing at them and asking me, “What are those?” Now, if the person you’re giving these to doesn’t like bourbon or doesn’t drink at all, you can easily omit the bourbon, and the pralines will be just as delicious.
No-Bake Vanilla Cookie Truffles
When I think of truffles, I think decadence. These no-bake vanilla cookie truffles not only look impressive, but they’re also delicious. And what I love about them is that I don’t need to turn on the oven. Get the kids involved in this one. They’ll love rolling the dough into little balls. Seeing the look of pride on their faces when they make something with you in the kitchen is priceless.
Salted Caramel Cracker Candy – aka – “Christmas Crack”
This time of year, Pinterest seems to be flooded with “Christmas Crack” recipes. When I was growing up in the 70s, my mom made this recipe with saltines, and I absolutely loved it. As I got older, I forgot about it. Flash forward to now, where everything old is new again, the recipe has re-emerged. I like to use butter crackers – like Ritz – instead of the saltines. It’s richer in flavor, and probably in calories, but isn’t the holidays all about going big or going home?
So there you have it – 3 (easy) DIY food gifts you can give to your friends, teachers, and neighbors this holiday season. Making these recipes are a great way to get your kids in the kitchen and begin to feed their love for baking and creating for years to come.
