Giving back to our community is so important and we are so excited to present Charleston Moms CARE, a series where we’ll be highlighting different non-profits around the Lowcountry. We’ll tell you more about the organization and how you can get involved by volunteering!
This month we are featuring South Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition, a local non-profit aimed at promoting, protecting, and supporting the art and science of human milk feeding as superior nutrition for infants and young children.
South Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition
South Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition’s vision is that breastfeeding, which is an essential public health issue, will become the societal norm for feeding infants and young children in the state.
Their goals are:
1. To be an instrument of societal change through political action, education, and networking.
2. To protect the rights of all mothers and infants in our state to have the opportunity, support, and resources to breastfeed as long as they desire.
3. To recognize leading individuals, organizations, and institutions in protecting, promoting, and supporting breastfeeding.
4. To provide resources for projects consistent with their purpose.
South Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition provides the following services:
Breastfeeding education and advocacy resources and information for families, professionals, and organizations through their website SCBreastfeeds.org; emailed newsletters, quarterly education meetings, and conferences for which registration is open to everyone (the conference is January 28th and 29th featuring Kimberly Seals Allers).
They also help parents locate lactation-friendly organizations through their new Community Partner initiative. Organizations that support their lactating customers and employees can apply to be listed on their Community Partner map (details can be found on their website).
Ways to get involved
They are actively recruiting members from all communities in South Carolina who are affected by and affect change for breastfeeding in their efforts to lead, join, and coordinate advocacy and support for lactating families in our state.
They have many volunteer opportunities and especially seek those with skills in technology, finance, media, data collection and analysis, fund-raising, lobbying, and marketing to help accomplish their mission as an all-volunteer, non-profit organization. They are currently working on projects to provide support in disasters for lactating families and advocate for incarcerated lactating individuals. Individuals can join, volunteers can sign up, and donations can be made on their website on the Get Involved page.
