Guide to Goose Creek Living

Charleston Moms is proud to partner with realtor Katie Olejniczak to bring you the following guide.

Named one of Money Magazine’s “Best Places to Live in the United States” in 2021, Goose Creek has maintained that small-town feeling where you don’t get overwhelmed or lost in a big-city environment; even with all its growth over the last 15 years. Enjoy all the perks of city life without the higher price tag that comes with it!

What is your favorite thing about raising kids here?

I love being far enough out of the craziness of downtown and Mount Pleasant but close enough that we’re still a quick drive to wherever we’d like to go. The city is making a lot of updates and working on so many new developments that I’m excited to see what will be here when our son (11 months) is older.

What makes Goose Creek family friendly?

The parks! Goose Creek has recently begun pushing for more inclusive spaces for kids, giving us the brand-new Central Creek Park. It has a fantastic playground and even has a splash pad. We also have John McCant’s Veterans Park, which is relatively new and has some great features. Goose Creek’s Recreation Center also regularly hosts events for kids. Our favorite was the park’s grand opening held in December which was Polar Express-themed. There was even fake snow! We also have a fantastic public library that does a kid’s story time.

What events does Goose Creek host?

Goose Creek holds a Farmers’ and Artisan Market every Saturday at the municipal center. The city also routinely adds new, family-friendly events, such as Kid Fest, the Back to School Splash, and the fishing rodeo.

Why would you recommend Goose Creek for other families?

There is so much development going on in this area that makes me hopeful that there will be endless opportunities for kids to get out and have fun. The only word of caution I would add to prospective families is regarding the schools. I encourage parents to do their research on the zoning of new neighborhoods, public schools, and potential alternatives, such as charter or private schools.

What makes your community unique?

The unique aspect comes from Goose Creek being in a constant state of growth. Some people have lived here for decades, but there’s also an influx of young couples and new families who see the construction and plans for the area and are excited. There’s a lot of potential here!

What are some of your favorite businesses, restaurants or shops in Goose Creek?

There are some great local spots popping up in Goose Creek. My favorite restaurants here are Ra Coffee, Stone’s Throw Brewing, Ti-Ney Bangkok, Blue Tequila Tacos and Grill, Bald Monkey Beanery, and Kanji Goose Creek.

Local businesses we love include Turning Page bookstore, Shine Daily Designs & Vinyl Market (a locally owned craft store), and 843 Beauty (our go-to for haircuts and brow waxes!)
