Guide to Mount Pleasant Living

Charleston Moms is proud to partner with realtor Katie Olejniczak to bring you the following guide.

First settled in 1680, Mount Pleasant is now the largest suburban town in the state of South Carolina. Once you cross the Ravenel bridge from Charleston to Mount Pleasant, a different world awaits. While low-key in comparison to its world-renowned neighbor, Mount Pleasant offers plenty of history, recreation, beaches, shopping, family-friendly events and stunning natural views. There is never a shortage of things to see and do.

What is your favorite thing about raising kids here?

My favorite thing about raising kids in Mount Pleasant is the public school system. Mount Pleasant has some of the best schools in the area and it was the main reason my family chose to live in this part of the Lowcountry. We’ve been very pleased with our sons’ elementary school – the teachers, the curriculum, and the learning environment. We’re hoping to find the same vibe as they move up to middle and high school.

What makes Mount Pleasant family friendly?

Mount Pleasant is family friendly because it’s made up of different neighborhoods that are generally safe and create a close community for the families that call them home. Lots of the neighborhoods offer great amenities like pools, fishing docks, playgrounds and social events like Food Truck Fridays, for instance. The Mount Pleasant Recreation Department really contributes to the city’s family friendly feel because they offer so many sports, summer camps, events and programs that bring the community together.

What events does Mount Pleasant host?

It seems like there’s always something fun happening year-round in Mount Pleasant! There’s the Tuesday afternoon Farmer’s Market from April to September, Blessing of the Fleet in the spring, Sweetgrass Festival and Waterfront Music & Movies in the summer, Live Under the Oaks concert series in the fall, and the Christmas Light Parade in the winter. One of the best events for families is the Children’s Day Festival every October. Boone Hall offers a full line-up of events like the Lowcountry Oyster Festival, Lowcountry Strawberry Festival, and Boone Hall Fright Nights. Sometimes all of the choices can be overwhelming, but it’s not a bad problem to have!

Why would you recommend Mount Pleasant for other families?

I recommend Mount Pleasant to other families because of the good school system and convenient access to shopping and services. Mount Pleasant offers a wide variety of everything that families need: grocery stores, pediatric practices, dentists, daycares, etc. If you need something, chances are you can find it in this city.

What makes your community unique?

Mount Pleasant is unique because of its location, location, location! It’s perfectly situated across the big bridge from Charleston, one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the world. Cross another bridge and you’re at Sullivan’s Island. Cross a different one and you’re on the Isle of Palms. The ocean is in our backyard and the city is just a short drive away. It’s perfect!

What are some of your favorite businesses, restaurants or shops in Mount Pleasant?

Here are some of my family’s favorite businesses in Mount Pleasant:

For recreation, my sons love Charleston Fun Park for their arcade games, go-karts, and mini golf. My husband and I like Coastal Expeditions for their kayak rentals on Shem Creek.

For shopping, I like Subtle and Sass Boutique for their fashionable and affordable clothing.

Our favorite restaurants include Page’s Okra Grill, Basil, and Grace & Grit.
