This Weekend: Celebrate Italian-American Heritage at the Summerville Italian Feast

October is National Italian-American Heritage and Cultural Month and what better way to celebrate than with a good ol’ cannoli! Grab the bambinos and drive out to Hutchinson Square this weekend for the Summerville Italian Feast, now in its 11th year!

Races at the Summerville Italian Feast

The weekend-long celebration kicks off this Saturday, October 7th with the inaugural Meatball Run (a USATF-certified 5K run) as well as a family-friendly 1-mile Fun Run through historic Summerville.

Awards will be given to the top three finalists for women and men in each age group category who complete the 5K run, and a team award for the highest participation. All participants in the Family Fun Run will receive medals. The top five students who complete the run will also receive free registration for next year’s race.

Sponsorship opportunities are still available and start at $250. Registration fees are $45 per person for the 5K run and $10 per person for the Family Fun Run. To register and to find packet pickup locations, check out the event’s Race Roster site.

The Feast

The Feast begins on Sunday, October 8th at 11:00 a.m. and runs until 6:00 p.m. Taste your way through Hutchinson Square and sample delicious foods and beverages from top Lowcountry eateries as well as shopping from the 87 participating vendors. Live entertainment will be provided, including student performances by Dorchester District Two students.

Heralded as the second largest festival in the sweet tea capital, the Summerville Italian Feast fetched crowds of over 12,000 last year with this year’s attendance expected to exceed 15,000. Proceeds from the festival and run benefit Dorchester Two Educational Foundation. The event has raised $75,000 to date and hopes to surpass the $100,000 mark this year according to the event organizer.

Vendor highlights include La Rustica, Rio Bertolini’s, Damiano’s Wood Fire Pizza, Puma’s Italian Ice & Hot Dog Shack, Sarah’s Cannoli’s, Amici’s Italian Bistro, and Laura.

So, gather la famiglia and head out to Summerville this weekend for a feast that’s sure to be Nonna-approved!

Where: Meatball Run starts and ends at St. Paul’s Anglican Church at 316 W. Carolina Avenue in Summerville; The Feast takes place at Hutchinson Square in historic downtown Summerville.

All proceeds from the Summerville Italian Feast and Meatball Run benefit the Dorchester District Two Educational Foundation.
