Guide to James Island Living

Charleston Moms is proud to partner with realtor Katie Olejniczak to bring you the following guide.

Once covered in farmland, the Town of James Island is now primarily a residential community that has somehow managed to protect that small-town feel its residents and visitors know and enjoy. Situated between the deep blue waters of the Charleston Harbor and the meandering Stono and Folly Rivers, James Island offers scenic marsh views, stunning natural trails and parks, and a close-knit community that can’t be beaten.

What is your favorite thing about raising kids here?

I think my favorite thing about raising kids on James Island is how it feels like a small town, while still being connected to everything Charleston has to offer. People who live on James Island LOVE James Island. It feels like a very special place to be a part of. JI families are laid back, fun, and really kind and welcoming. We have met our very best friends in Charleston because of living on James Island.

What makes James Island family friendly?

Gosh, so many things! James Island has great elementary schools, our wonderful Baxter-Patrick library, the huge James Island County Park, and fun events at our cute Town Hall. Plus, we are 10 minutes to the beach and 10 minutes to downtown Charleston. The location, community events, rec center sports, local restaurants, and chill lifestyle all make James Island family-friendly.

I feel so lucky that I can take the kids on a last-minute walk on the beach at 5 p.m. without having to make a big day of it. And, I love that it takes such little effort to get downtown! It seriously is the best of both worlds.

What events does James Island host?

Some of my favorite events are the Festival of Lights at the James Island County Park and The Town Market at the James Island Town Hall.

The Town Market is held on the first Friday of each month at the James Island Town Hall. There are tons of great vendors, food trucks, and activities for families – all under the beautiful backdrop of our Town Hall and its big oak trees.

The Festival of Lights is an absolute must-do during the holiday season. Visitors come from all over the country to see this huge holiday light display at the James Island County Park! The Festival of Lights is known for its three-mile driving tour, but there is much more to see and do. The festival also has a sand sculpture, a holiday train, an enchanted walking trail, a carousel, Santa Claus, a climbing wall and so much more. You don’t want to miss seeing over two million lights illuminate the park each year!

Why would you recommend James Island for other families?

From my perspective (and I’m sure this could be debated), there’s not a lot of “mommy wars” or competition as to who has the nicest house, etc. People are genuinely really nice and are open to meeting new people. Our neighborhood is not fancy, but we’ve got the best neighbors in the world. To me, that’s everything.

What makes your community unique?

I think being so close to Folly Beach helps give James Island its cool, hippy vibe. James Islanders are just happy and chill. As an island, we are blessed with spectacular views. Driving along Harborview Road and looking out towards the peninsula is gorgeous. Driving down Folly Road at sunset towards the beach is breathtaking. These views remind me daily how lucky I am to live here!

What are some of your favorite businesses, restaurants or shops on James Island?

James Island is filled with wonderful and quirky small businesses and restaurants. Some of my favorites are Bohemian Bull, Edison, Baguette Magic, Tiny Tadpoles, Charleston Pour House, Ellis Creek Fish Camp, Paisanos, Charleston Flower Market, and Terrace Theater…! There are so many small businesses that I love here! It’s rare to see a chain restaurant and that’s the way I like it.
