Guide to Daniel Island Living

Charleston Moms is proud to partner with Katie Olejniczak to bring you the following guide.

Situated between the Cooper and Wando Rivers, Daniel Island is a sanctuary to those who inhabit its almost 10 square miles. Considered part of the city of Charleston, the island is home to eight main parks, with each neighborhood on the island having its own park. Daniel Island also has a downtown area where many businesses, restaurants, doctors’ offices, shops, and condominiums are located. With three churches and three schools (pre-K, K-8, and 9-12), you won’t need (or want) to leave your little island oasis!

What is your favorite thing about raising kids here?

My favorite thing about Daniel Island is definitely the walkable community! You can walk almost anywhere… dinner, parks, trails, sports, school, library, grocery. While it is only a 15-minute car ride from downtown Charleston or the beach.

What makes Daniel Island family friendly?

Daniel Island is family-friendly because of the incredible community. Everyone you meet is friendly. You can make a new best friend just by walking, biking, or riding your golf cart on the island.

What events does Daniel Island host?

Daniel Island has live acoustic concerts every Thursday at the Waterfront Park. You can bring a blanket or chair and your own picnic and listen to local music while the kids play at the splash pad or playground.

There are farmers’ markets when the weather is nice and holiday festivals for most major holidays.

And of course the amazing concerts and tennis tournaments at Credit One Stadium. Every Spring you can enjoy a week of tennis and local shopping vendors at the Credit One Charleston Open while year-round you can catch your favorite artist performing – everyone from Kenny Chesney to Needtobreathe to Elton John!

Why would you recommend Daniel Island for other families?

Daniel Island is like living in your own little world. The island literally has everything you could ever need in nine square miles. We’re so blessed to live where people vacation!

What makes your community unique?

Daniel Island is so unique because of the ability to walk anywhere you need to go with ease. My family rarely leaves the island outside of going to the beach, church, and my kids’ school. It’s truly like its own little city.

What are some of your favorite businesses, restaurants or shops on Daniel Island?

My husband and I love The Kingstide for a nice date night by the water or a moms’ night out with friends. I enjoy grabbing a coffee at The Dime (right next to The Kingstide) and then watching my kiddos play at the splash pad or playground. Peace Love Hip Hop has been my new obsession – weekly Zumba classes help keep this mama sane!
