Guide to West Ashley Living

Charleston Moms is proud to partner with realtor Katie Olejniczak to bring you the following guide.

Derived from the fact that the land is west of the Ashley River, the majority of West Ashley is considered within the city limits of Charleston because it is not a self-governed city or town. West Ashley is flanked by the scenic waterfronts and marshes of the Ashley and Stono Rivers and ancient moss-draped oak trees. You don’t want to miss out on these stunning views and relaxed city life!

What is your favorite thing about raising kids here?

My favorite thing about raising my child here is the many different activities, restaurants, and breweries West Ashley offers that are kid friendly! I love going on the West Ashley Greenway. It’s so beautiful, especially the sunflower field that grows along it is spectacular! There are also so many parks that are fantastic for the kids to meet other kids as well as moms. Another favorite thing would be the Bees Ferry Library off of Bees Ferry Road. They have story time Tuesdays and Wednesdays and many other events for kids of all ages. It’s always fun to meet other mamas there as well, and their setup for toddlers is great!

What makes West Ashley family friendly?

The restaurants and breweries in West Ashley are very kid-friendly! An example would be Frothy Beard Brewery; they host many different events and most of them are kid-friendly and always fun. They have trivia nights on Thursdays, which are always packed and exciting. They also have a great patio area in the back with some games that are wonderful for families with little ones. Another great restaurant would be Locals Sushi & Bar. They always have specials, trivia nights, half-price sushi, and more!

West Ashley is also known for Magnolia Gardens and Middleton Place. These attractions are former plantations and are now home to manicured gardens and walking trails! You’ll see weddings and private parties held here as well.

What events does West Ashley host?

West Ashley hosts well known themed trivia nights at the Charleston Sports Bar, such as The Office TV Show. They always bring in celebrities and/or actors from the show. This year they are having the character “David Wallace” (aka Andy Buckley) host Office Trivia night on August 1st, 2023!

The City of Charleston hosts adult co-ed soccer leagues that have games in West Ashley and the fields at St. Andrew’s Middle School and West Ashley Park are great places to play. Charleston Sports also hosts activities such as kickball which is always a great way to meet new people. We had games at the Elk Lodge in West Ashley and after games would go down the street to Charleston Sports Bar for a refreshing drink! Other events include parades, festivals, farmers markets, karaoke nights, sip and paint events, 5K races, and more!

Why would you recommend West Ashley for other families?

I would recommend West Ashley to other families because of the location of the city. It’s not far from downtown Charleston and the traffic isn’t as horrible as most people may think. You just need to know when to get on Highway 17 to go home! (I try to avoid the rush hour from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.) This wonderful city is slowly up and coming in the Charleston area and new developments and neighborhoods are always being built. Since it’s growing, it’s a good time to look for your forever home here!

What makes your community unique?

Definitely the West Ashley Greenway and the Magnolia Gardens and Middleton Plantation! If you aren’t familiar, the Greenway is a straight and mostly paved path utilized for walking, jogging, roller skating, and off-street cycling. It stretches across West Ashley from Main Road in the west to Folly Road in the east. Perfect to get the kids outside in the fresh air!

What are some of your favorite businesses, restaurants or shops in West Ashely?

My favorite restaurants are Locals Sushi & Bar, Frothy Beard Brewery, Bear-E-Patch Cafe West Ashley, Zen Asian Fusion, Box Car Betty, and Avondale Area Triangle

When it comes to recreation and getting outside, we love Magnolia Gardens, Middleton Plantation, West Ashley Greenway, and the wonderful West Ashley parks.

My favorite places to shop are Plato’s Closet and the classic Big Lots!

Here are five more reasons to love West Ashley!
