Guide to Johns Island Living

Charleston Moms is proud to partner with realtor Katie Olejniczak to bring you the following guide.
Johns Island

Bordered by Wadmalaw, Seabrook, Kiawah, Edisto, Folly, and James Island, Johns Island is the largest island in South Carolina. Roughly one-third of Johns Island is within the city limits of Charleston. The island is home to the Angel Oak, a Southern live oak tree estimated to be 400–500 years old. The island’s proximity to downtown Charleston and its scenic property have made it an active location for development. You’d be lucky to call this charming place home!

What is your favorite thing about raising kids here?

Johns Island, while growing, still has a small-town feel. I love that everywhere we go on the island, we run into someone we know.

What makes Johns Island family friendly?

The recent growth of the island has attracted many young families. Our library is centrally located and recently renovated. Johns Island Park, owned by the City of Charleston, has also been recently renovated and includes a playground, baseball fields, soccer field, volleyball court, tennis courts, and a disc golf course!

What events does Johns Island host?

Freshfields Village, nestled between Johns Island and Kiawah and Seabrook Islands, hosts a number of events throughout the year such as outdoor concerts and movie nights, farmers markets, and holiday festivals.

Johns Island County Park, owned by Charleston County Parks and Recreation, also hosts a number of events during the year. Their Harvest Festival is one of our favorite events each year!

Johns Island Farmers Market is also a great Year-Round Farmers Market open every Saturday from 9:30 am – 1:30 pm rain or shine.

Why would you recommend Johns Island for other families?

Johns Island schools are making amazing strides as the island itself is growing. The island is filled with unique locally owned shops and restaurants. There’s never a shortage of outdoor activities or events to entertain the whole family.

What makes your community unique?

The island has a mix of established neighborhoods, new build neighborhoods, and rural properties. You have your pick if you prefer an HOA neighborhood with a community pool or solitude and acreage. We are surrounded by the Stono River, Kiawah River, and Edisto River creating beautiful views and amazing wildlife.

What are some of your favorite businesses, restaurants or shops on Johns Island?

The Tattooed Moose, Cabana Burger, and The Natural are our favorite family restaurants. Wild Olive, Royal Tern, and Blu Oyster are amazing for date nights! Charleston Aqua Park is filled with family fun during our hot summer months.
