North Charleston

Located just a few miles north of downtown Charleston, North Charleston is a vibrant city you’ll want to be a part of. This eclectic city is home to the Charleston International Airport; full of shopping, natural scenic views, entertainment, and good family fun.

What is your favorite thing about raising kids here?

I think North Charleston is a great place for families because there’s just so much to do here, but I think my favorite thing is that it’s a very diverse community. From North Charleston we can get to downtown Charleston in a reasonable time, while still being able to get to our beautiful beaches easily. Its central location gives families plenty of options when we do want to venture out of the city.

What makes North Charleston family friendly?

We’re within minutes of the airport, so travel is very convenient. Being near the North Charleston Coliseum and Performing Arts Center allows us to attend events and see our favorite artists close to home. Wannamaker County Park is fun to visit year-round and as far as restaurants; there are just so many options. Check out more about why I love living in North Charleston!

What events does North Charleston host?

Darius Rucker’s Riverfront Revival at Riverfront Park is a two-day music festival featuring specially selected performers paying homage to country music and the Lowcountry. Everyone loves a good food truck, and North Charleston has been home to the annual Charleston Food Truck Festival for 12 years now. Each spring, Riverfront Park also hosts the Highwater Music Festival.

Why would you recommend North Charleston for other families?

I’d recommend North Charleston to other families because of course there’s so much to do – amazing parks and playgrounds, places to eat, and events to attend, but also, if you’re looking for great libraries, you’ll find them here. In fact, the new Keith Summey North Charleston Library is a state-of-the-art facility with a MakerSpace, and Creative Studio is a significant asset to the community.

What makes your community unique?

I truly think the area tends to get a bad rap, and while I won’t deny that North Charleston has its issues (what large city doesn’t) there is an overall close-knit feel that the city has; but to find it, it requires that you get out into the community and visit/patronize small businesses. There are some wonderful people here!

What are some of your favorite businesses, restaurants or shops in North Charleston?

I keep finding myself at El Molino on River’s Avenue lately; having been there twice in the last five days. Our family also loves Dashi on Remount Road. Park Circle is a great place for dining and shopping; one of my current favorites is Wild Alabaster on Reynolds Avenue.
