Throughout our communities, you may have seen little free libraries popping up all over the Lowcountry. Did you know libraries like these can be found in all 50 states, in over 100 countries, and on all seven continents? This non-profit was founded in 2012 and has served as a catalyst for building communities around the accessibility of books for all ages. By partnering with a global network of volunteer-led book exchanges, these libraries help populate underserved communities and remove barriers to book access. The little free libraries can provide books that represent and promote diversity, understanding, empathy, and inclusion for all readers. To date, the Little Free Library organization has registered charters for over 100,000 little free libraries, which in turn has provided access to millions of books being shared each year.
Charleston is fortunate to have such a wonderful community of volunteers who help and support our surrounding area with more than 130 little free libraries. Exploring these libraries within our communities can help foster the love for reading and show appreciation for our fellow neighbors.
